Taking Action for Student Mental Wellness

Blue Valley School District middle school and high school coaches and sponsors unite to take part in the largest Mental Health First Aid training event conducted in Kansas at Hilltop Conference Center in Overland Park, KS. Mental Health First Aid is a National Council for Mental Wellbeing training program designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The coaches and sponsors participating in the training will take a deep dive into mental health and substance use challenges affecting those aged 12-18. The course is being led by Johnson County Mental Health Center’s qualified Mental Health First Aid instructors.

The national training course, sponsored locally by the EveryDayMatters Foundation and Netsmart, introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. By taking action in this initiative, Mental Health First Aiders will help create an environment that further supports the mental health of local middle school and high school students.
